no you dont, you just have to prove you paid sales tax, i was there with a n.y. buddy in springfield when he did it, not just hearsay! you might have to go to springfield to do it but if you do the mardi-gras is right across the street :D worth the trip

NY law requires all ATV's to be registered even if only used on your own property and to register it you have to pay sales tax or have an exemption. After you register in NY all you have to do is make copies and send them with the Mass reg form to Springfield. I did it a few months ago and got the Mass reg and plate back within a week.

Zags, you are right but when I called Mass they said that I had to send them a copy of both the NY reg and paid NYS sales tax.

If you have a ny reg then thats the proof that you paid taxes because you cant reg in ny without paying taxes.I know when i did mine and i have 2 of them alls i did is send in a copy of my reg, a 30.00 ck, and a mass reg form witch you can get online and send it to the address on the reg form you should recieve a plate within 2 weeks

Here is the link to register ATV's in MA
http://www.mass.gov/dfwele/dle/instructionspage.htm#ATV

To ride in Pittsfield State forest here are the new rules - Saturday, May 29, 2010. To maximize rider safety and enjoyment and minimize degradation of the remaining trails from overuse during the closure period, DCR will institute an ATV and motorcycle recreational use permit system for Pittsfield State Forest. A maximum of 50 rider permits will be issued through Pittsfield State Forest headquarters each day.

More Pittsfield Info Link - http://www.mass.gov/dcr/recreate/ohv/pi ... anning.pdf

All other forests do not require the special permit, just registration.

It was fairly easy to register as an out of state resident.

If Josh still has his FIRST registration certificate, that shows the exact amount of sales tax paid if the machince was purchased used. Otherwise, a copy of the sales receipt and a copy of the latest registration cert is needed.
